February 8th marked BAMMbino's Second Birthday and we celebrated in style at Imperial College Business School. It was a great night and for those of you that couldn't make it, we do hope you'll be with us at an event in the near future. BAMMbino is all about the members and we wouldn't be where we are without the committment and enthusiasm you show us. So, thank you ...
... and we have SO MUCH coming up, it's hard to know where to start. OK, it's that time again and we're looking for nominations for the BAMMbinovation Awards 2010. Last years winners are making their way to Italy in April 2010 for the Italian Association of Medical Managers conference to present their work, so you know it's worth entering. Follow the link below to find out how you can enter
We're still looking for contributions to our patient safety survey and hope that those of you that haven't filled it in yet will take the time to click the link below and give us your thought. The more people that contribute the more valuable the results of the survey will be.
The results will be published in due course, and will help to inform
the discussions at the Agents for Change Conference which is planned
for June 7th in London.
We also just published two new BAMMbino SMARTkit, How to set up a Junior Doctor Management Committee and How to improve Handover. Check them out at the SMARTkits page accessed at the link below.
Please use these to freely, but let us know if they're of any use to
you. We always want feedback on our services and we'd be thrilled to
help you out in any way we can.
The other Working Groups are bustling away too. They're all open to enthusiastic members and we truly hope you will get involved. Have a look over the link at the list below, look at some of the work already being done and then get in touch with the lead on that group and see how you can contribute.
There are a couple of other events coming up too:
A 2 day workshop on Building Safety Improvement Skills (BaSIS) run by
the Institute for Innovation and Improvement is on the 3rd and 4th of
March:

2009 was a very very busy year, but
BAMMbino hustled and never showed any sign of running out of steam.
•
In December BAMMbino teamed up with the Royal Society of Medicine to deliver an
evening focused on Leadership in Healthcare, led by one of our favourite
supporter, NHS Medical Director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh. The evening was a
lovely way to bookend a busy, but successful year, we met a lot of new people
in the RSM fellows and a good evening was had by all. Bring on 2010.
•
November also saw the inaugural Night School for the BAMMbino Primary Care
Group. Hosted at the auspicious Royal College of GPs in London, this event
started the ball rolling under what is an increasingly vibrant and engaged
group of junior doctors. We were lucky enough to have a presentation from the
National Clinical Director for Primary Care as well as another Primary Care
Director and a really good group of delegates. This group are liable to be busy
in 2010 and already have an event planned for May.
•
The BAMMbino North West group ran several more events in the latter half of the
year too, an evening with a local Chief Executive in September, an Improvement
Workshop in November, and even the first of their Masterclass series on NLP and
Presentation Techniques in December. The group in the North West continue to
thrive and already have another Masterclass, a Night School and a Dragon's Den
session planned fro early 2010.
•
September saw another debut, this time in Leeds for the first BAMMbino
Yorkshire Night School. Two Medical Directors from a local trust gave inspiring
and rousing talks about patient safety and the ways junior doctors can
contribute to improving efficiency and standards in those areas. The next event
in Yorkshire is currently being planned for York.
•
In August and again in November we extended our reach again, starting a new
group in BAMMbino East Midlands with events in Nottingham and Leicester. Local
Medical Directors, Chief Executives and Clinical Leaders were all kind enough
to give up their time to meet groups of junior doctors from the front line in
order to discuss the role of the manager and leader in healthcare and suggest
ways that junior doctors can help to improve the service. The East Midlands
group are another strong group in BAMMbino, we were pleased to meet them and
look forward to returning there in 2010 and getting to know them even better.
•
In June we presented the BAMMbino Summer School at the Hilton, London Docklands.
This was the first year BAMMbino had commanded their own strand at BAMM's
Annual Conference and the BAMMbino Team put together a very impressive full day
or plenaries and workshops. We had some great speakers and as usual a fantastic
audience that really made the day one to remember. Next year is going to be
EVEN better. I'll get a day out to you soon and you can put it in your diaries.
•
In June we joined forces with the Department of Health, the BMJ and the
National Patient Safety Agency to present Junior Doctors: Agents for Change to
a bustling crowd. With presentations from the NHS Medical Director, the Chief
Medical Officer, the editor of the BMJ and even a NASA Astronaut, the programme
was hugely well received and a repeat event next year is bein planned as I
write.
• At the end of March we returned to Manchester for the
second North West Night School. The group in the North West are something we're
hugely proud of. There's a burgeoning network here of the next generation of
NHS leaders and BAMMbino is thrilled to be a part of their growth. This time
round the night saw an Interview with A Medical Director ... or 5 to be more
specific as a cohort of local service leaders gave up their time to join us for
the evening and talk candidly with the delegates. We'll be back in the North
West in July. Get in touch if you haven't been along yet and want to take part.
•
In March we made our first foray into two new areas, Primary Care and the
Southwest with a Night School event in Swindon lead by Chief Executive Dr
Graham Rich who presented a fascinating and rousing presentation From GP to
Chief Executive. The new people we met and the new avenues we started to move
into were a vital start to the directions we hope to move BAMMbino into in our second
year. We're going to return to The South West shortly, get in touch if you want
to know more about that.
•
In February we held An Evening with Sir Bruce Keogh to great acclaim. The NHS
Medical Director proved a wonderful speaker for our, as always, enthusiastic
audience. We packed out Imperial College Business School again and a productive
and thought provoking evening was had by all.
2008
was just a great year for BAMMbino and as the year ended we were offered a
natural opportunity to stop and take stock of what we’d achieved.
• From its inception in February of 2008 BAMMbino Membership
has grown to over 200 strong and shows no signs of slowing down. That’s just a
fabulous show of strength in numbers and has assured us all that we were correct
to make the commitment we made in starting the initiative.
• We’ve successfully run a Launch Event, a strand at BAMMs
Summer School, 2 Night Schools and An Evening with Sir Liam Donaldson and had
nearly 200 people attend in all. All those events have been great successes and
feedback has just been wonderful to read.
• BAMMbino Members have contributed to BAMM Publications,
appearing in 4 issues of Clinical Leader Voice consecutively and with much more
on the horizon.
• BAMMbino Members have attended and contributed to BAMM
networks, informing on the implementation of policy with this input set to
expand exponentially in the new year.
In general BAMMbinos visibility throughout the service and reputation has grown
massively. We’re rapidly becoming the ‘go to’ group for supporting and
developing Jr Doctors with an interest in management and leadership and we have
no intention of resting on our laurels.
In recent years, it
has become increasingly apparent that the medical profession needs to develop
high quality leadership and management skills in order to effectively
participate in the great healthcare debate. Work by the Royal Colleges, NHS
Institute for Innovation and Improvement and BAMM has called for these skills
to be nurtured from an early stage in doctors' careers, but there is little
support and advice for those who wish to be the Clinical Directors, Medical
Directors and Chief Medical Officers of the future
At Bammbino, we
intend to create a living network of enthusiastic Junior Doctors who see
medicla management as an intrinsic part of their careers. By acting as a portal
for information, advice and support we will be building on the ethos of BAMM,
to help create a new generation of doctors who will be able to work proactively
in and with the the ever-changing healthcare environment.
Our intention is to
deliver a service that will guide our members through the latest hot topics,
encourage their own attempts to improve services for patients and help mentor
them through the ups and downs of their careers.
If you know a keen
medical student, F1, F2, SHO or SpR who shows an interest in the 'bigger
picture', then let us know by sending their details to

we will tryto make their journey a little smoother than those who have gone
before.

service. BAMMbino has received encouragement from people like:

Medical Director
Paul Streets, Chief Executive,
PMETB
Sir Ian Carruthers OBE, Chief
Executive, NHS South West
