The BAMMbino Summer School
PRICES SLASHED!
23rd June 2009, Hilton, London Docklands
The Second Annual BAMMbino Summer School comes hot on the heels of what
has been a remarkable year for BAMMbino. We've had some huge speakers,
Chief Medical Officers, Chief Executives, Medical Directors,
Postgraduate Deans and many more. For our Summer School, we've tried to
put together a programme that answers one of the questions that YOU ask
us most often, that is, 'How, as a trainee can I get more experience
and actively get involved with the management of my trust'. We'll be
hearing from some of your peers on how exactly they took that step and
hopefully we'll offer a little inspiration that you, the delegates,
might take back to work with you. We will be taking a look at MBTI as
well as welcoming Professor Mitch Rabkin himself, all the way from
Harvard Business School. Then we'll finish the day by watching the
finalists in this years BAMMbinnovation Awards presenting their
projects. Last but not least, we'll provide some space and hopefully a
little ambience in order to facilitate some networking.
Speakers Include;
Professor Mitch Rabkin – Professor of Medicine, Harvard Business School
Dr Phil Ayres – Deputy Medical Director, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Dr Claire Lemer – Clinical Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer
Mr Oliver Warren - Clinical Lead for NHS London's Prepare to Lead mentoring scheme
Dr James Mountford – Senior Expert, Healthcare, McKinsey & Company UK
Dr Jim O'Connell – Director of Leadership, Department of Health
Gurneet Kaurthandi, NHS Workforce Leadership Team
The First Annual BAMMbinnovation Award presentations and results

Search for Local BAMMbino Representatives
BAMMbino has grown rapidly over the last year to nearly 250 members. We would very much like to build on this foundation by asking keen and enthusiastic members to help us reach out to a far wider audience. We are looking for members who would be prepared to act as Local BAMMbino Rep to help promote the work of BAMMbino and its events to colleagues at a local level. This may be as simple as putting up posters in your Doctors Mess but could lead to helping us coordinate an event such as a BAMMbino Night School in your local area. It would be up to you how involved you would like to be. If you are interested in becoming a local ambassador for BAMMbino or would like to know more or even have suggestions already of what we might offer to your area then drop me a line back and we'll get to work employing your skills to the network.

2009 has been a very, very busy year so far, but BAMMbino as always is bustling and showing no signs of running out of steam.
• At the end of March we returned to Manchester for the second North West Night School. The group in the North West are something we're hugely proud of. There's a burgeoning network here of the next generation of NHS leaders and BAMMbino is thrilled to be a part of their growth. This time round the night saw an Interview with A Medical Director ... or 5 to be more specific as a cohort of local service leaders gave up their time to join us for the evening and talk candidly with the delegates. We'll be back in the North West in July. Get in touch if you haven't been along yet and want to take part.
• In March we made our first foray into two new areas, Primary Care and the Southwest with a Night School event in Swindon lead by Chief Executive Dr Graham Rich who presented a fascinating and rousing presentation From GP to Chief Executive. The new people we met and the new avenues we started to move into were a vital start to the directions we hope to move BAMMbino into in our second year. We're going to return to The South West shortly, get in touch if you want to know more about that.
• In February we held An
Evening with Sir Bruce Keogh to great acclaim. The NHS Medical Director
proved a wonderful speaker for our, as always, enthusiastic audience.
We packed out Imperial College Business School again and a productive
and thought provoking evening was had by all.
2008 was just a great year for BAMMbino and as the year ended we were offered a natural opportunity to stop and take stock of what we’d achieved.
• From its inception in February of 2008 BAMMbino Membership has grown to over 200 strong and shows no signs of slowing down. That’s just a fabulous show of strength in numbers and has assured us all that we were correct to make the commitment we made in starting the initiative.
• We’ve successfully run a Launch Event, a strand at BAMMs Summer School, 2 Night Schools and An Evening with Sir Liam Donaldson and had nearly 200 people attend in all. All those events have been great successes and feedback has just been wonderful to read.
• BAMMbino Members have contributed to BAMM Publications, appearing in 4 issues of Clinical Leader Voice consecutively and with much more on the horizon.
• BAMMbino Members have attended and contributed to BAMM networks, informing on the implementation of policy with this input set to expand exponentially in the new year.
In general BAMMbinos visibility throughout the service and reputation has grown massively. We’re rapidly becoming the ‘go to’ group for supporting and developing Jr Doctors with an interest in management and leadership and we have no intention of resting on our laurels.

Why BAMMbino?
In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the medical profession needs to develop high quality leadership and management skills in order to effectively participate in the great healthcare debate. Work by the Royal Colleges, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and BAMM has called for these skills to be nurtured from an early stage in doctor's careers, but there is little support and advice for those who wish to be the Clinical Directors, Medical Directors and Chief Medical Officers of the future.
At BAMMbino, we intend to create a living network of enthusiastic Junior Doctors who see medical management and leadership as an intrinsic part of their future careers. By acting as a portal for information, advice and support we will be building on the ethos of BAMM to help create a new generation of doctors who will be able to work proactively in and with the ever-changing healthcare environment.
Our intention is to deliver a service that will guide our members through the latest hot topics, encourage their own attempts to improve services for patients, and help mentor them through the ups and downs of their individual careers.
If you are a keen medical student, F1, F2, SHO or SpR who shows an interest in the ‘bigger picture' then let us know by sending their details to

and we will try to make their journey a little smoother than those who have gone before.
Since we started BAMMbino we have been thrilled by the swell of support from all corners of the service. People like;
- Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health
- Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director
- Paul Streets, Chief Executive, PMETB
- Sir Ian Carruthers OBE, Chief Executive, NHS South West
-
Miss Wendy Reid, Postgraduate Dean, London Deanery
-
Professor Jacky Hayden, Dean of Postgraduate Medical Studies, NHS North West
-

-
Professor Andy Adam, President, The Royal College of Radiologists
-
Dr Rafik Taibjee, Chairman, Junior Members Forum, BMA
-
Dr Maggie Blott, Vice President, Education, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
It's truly reassuring to have receieved these shows of support and with it the feeling that with BAMMbino we are making the first steps towards something very important. We hope you will join us and help make the difference.
